An easy way to achieve this is via the .htaccess file in the root directory. When you set up your hosting you would have specified the url with or without the www. If you had declared it with the www, you will need to redirect all urls without www to www and vice versa.

For redirect for urls without www to www, add these lines of code to the start of the .htaccess file.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com\.au$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com.au/$1 [R=301,L]

If your url does not contain the .au or any other extension in the end, you can ignore the last part “\.au” and it would look like this.

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]

If you would like to redirect www to the url without www use the code below:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.example\.com\.au$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://example.com.au/$1 [R=301,L]

Redirecting dynamic urls wouldn’t work with the regular .htaccess Redirect 301 code. A good way to do it would be to follow the format below:

Eg: I would like to redirect www.example.com/index.php?id=23&option=virtuemart to www.example.com/virtuem

The code on .htaccess should be:

RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} ^id=23&option=virtuemart$
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ http://www.example.com/virtuem? [R=301,L]
